Park Hyeon-Jeong
Abstract
The Korea Ginseng has been used in the Orient as an elixer for hundred of years. However, the demonstrable actions of Ginseng .components are not fully explored and the knowledge concerning the mode of action is fragmentally.
The authors tried in this experiment to observe whether Korea Ginseng, which is known to have protective action to some stress, is effective on side effects of CDDP-treated cancer patients. The experiment was performed in two groups ; the control (5 healthy men) and cancer (15 patients) group. The cancer group also divided in 3 subgroup ; the chemotherapy with placebo treated, the chemotherapy after 6.3gm Ginseng treated, the chemotherapy with 6.3gm Ginseng treated group.
Various laboratory examination for renal, liver, hematologic function and serum electrolyte
were studied at pre and postadministration. At the same time, vital sign and subjective
symptoms, such as appetite, nausea and vomiting, sleeping, fatigue. digestion were checked. The results Were as follows
1. The side effects for Ginseng were absent.
2. There were no differences in vital sign and subjective symptom between placebo and Ginseng treated group.
3. Leukocyte and platelets were significantly decreased after administration of CDDP, but as Ginseng was added, the values showed higher, nearly to control.
4. Serum GOT & GPT levels after administration of CDDP were significantly elevated, but the values after administration of Ginseng as well showed lower ones which were nearly control.
5. There were no difference in the level of serum creatinin. BUN. ?-2 microglobulin between CDDP treated and Ginseng treated group.
